A signature scent is the one people remember you by — the trace on a scarf, the reason someone leans in a little closer. Finding it is less about luck and more about knowing what you already love.
1. Start with what you already love
Think of smells that make you happy outside of perfume: fresh laundry, a lemon grove, roses after rain, a wood fire, vanilla in the kitchen. These everyday memories map almost perfectly onto the fragrance families:
- Clean laundry, sea air, cut grass → Fresh
- Lemonade, orange peel, a summer terrace → Citrus
- A bouquet, a garden, rose petals → Floral
- Ripe pear, berries, peach → Fruity
- A cedar closet, a library, smoke from a fireplace → Woody
- Spice markets, leather, incense → Warm & Spicy
- Vanilla, caramel, coffee, baking → Sweet & Gourmand
2. Decide where you'll wear it
A scent for the office should sit close to the skin; a scent for evenings can project and linger. Fresh, citrus and soft florals feel effortless by day. Woods, amber, spice and gourmand notes come alive at night and in cooler weather. Many people end up with two signatures — one for day, one for night.
3. Choose your strength
The same fragrance often comes in several concentrations. An eau de toilette is lighter and brighter; an eau de parfum is richer and lasts longer; a parfum or extrait is the deepest and most intimate. Read our guide to concentrations to find your level.
4. Test on skin, not paper
Paper strips show you the opening; your skin shows you the truth. Spray once on the inner wrist, then wait. The first ten minutes are the top notes — bright and fleeting. The heart appears after about half an hour, and the base, the part you'll live with, after two hours. Never judge a fragrance in the first minute.
5. Try before you commit
Our samples and travel-size minis let you wear a fragrance for a full day — or a full week — before investing in a bottle. And once you know what you love, testers are the same fragrance at a smarter price.
